The Fair Player Club Seminar for Compliance and Business Ethics

with Daejeon Metropolitan City

Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF) organized the Fair Player Club Seminar for Compliance and Business Ethics, co-hosted by Daejeon Metropolitan City, Daejeon Chamber of Commerce & Industry, and Global Compact Network Korea (GCNK), on November 30, 2016 at the Daejeon Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in Daejeon, Republic of Korea.

This seminar, sponsored by Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE), Ministry of Interior (MOI), Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC), and Siemens Integrity Initiative and organized by Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF), was the sixth seminar in the second cycle of Fair Player Club (FPC) for participants from private enterprises and public organizations located in Daejeon. The seminar introduced global and domestic trends of compliance and business ethics and anti-corruption policies, programs, and management systems and shared anti-corruption cases of public and private enterprises.

The first Fair Player Club seminar with Seoul Metropolitan Government was held on July 14, 2016 at the Korea Press Center, in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The second Fair Player Club seminar with Busan Metropolitan city was held on September 20, 2016 at the Busan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in Busan, Republic of Korea. The third Fair Player Club seminar with Gwangju Metropolitan City was held on September 22, 2016 at the Gwangju Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in Gwangju, Republic of Korea. The fourth Fair Player Club seminar with Daegu Metropolitan City was held on November 11, 2016 at the Daegu EXCO, in Daegu, Republic of Korea. The fifth Fair Player Club seminar with Ulsan Metropolitan City was held on November 28, 2016 at the Ulsan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in Ulsan, Republic of Korea.

Mr. PARK Hee-won, Chairman, Daejeon Chamber of Commerce & Industry, said in his opening speech that “This seminar provides core requirements to create a clean society and public-private partnership. Especially, corporate social responsibility, compliance and business ethics are emphasized in these days. Therefore, I hope this seminar can be an actual help to all the business community in Daejeon.”

Mr. LEE, Hyeon-ju, Vice Mayor for Political Affairs, Daejeon Metropolitan City, said in his welcoming speech that “I think this seminar can be helpful to companies to prevent corruption risks and strengthen capability by sharing the current trends and cases regarding on compliance and business ethics in domestic and foreign scope. The clean, fair and sound society can be created by complying with ethical standards and fair practices together.”

Mr. LEE, Sang-min, a congressman representing Yoosung Eul District of Daejeon, sent a congratulatory message that “Through this seminar, I anticipate that the dynamic culture of integrity can settle in Daejeon Metropolitan City and compliance and business ethics can promote the fair economic development of Daejeon. I will also try to do my best for building a society based on anti-corruption at the parliamentary level.”

Mr. IM, Hong-jae, Vice President and Secretary-General of GCNK, said in his welcoming speech that “I hope the Fair Player Club can be a core platform to create the fair business environment for compliance, business ethics, and anti-corruption in Republic of Korea.”, and introduced CSR and global anti-corruption trends, international regulations, and conventions related with anti-corruption including OECD Anti-Bribery Convention, UN Convention Against Corruption, and UK Bribery Act.

Ms. LEE Eun-kyung, Team Leader of GCNK, introduced global anti-corruption guidelines and compliance system and presented definition and types of corruption, risks of corruption and anti-corruption opportunities, global compliance materials, and ‘Anti-corruption Ethics and Compliance Guideline for Business and SMEs'.

Mr. KOH, Jong-seung, Audit and Inspection Officer, Daejeon Metropolitan City, shared the corruption prevention policies of Daejeon Metropolitan City. He also explained how Daejeon Metropolitan City prizecould be ranked as the 1st position in 2015 public organization anti-corruption performance evaluation including various anti-corruption policies and activities related with the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act.

Mr. BAEK Seung-jae, Executive Director, EY, gave his lecture on the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act and and social changes after the Act was enacted. He also introduced some situational application cases based on interpretation by ‘Task Force of Inter-Agency Committee' of Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC), Ministry of Justice, and Ministry of Government Legislation.

Mr. BAEK, Gyeong-mok, Deputy General Manager, Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water), shared its CSR activities and cases of compliance and business ethics. . He also explained its measures to improve internal integrity and internalize compliance into its organization culture.

Mr. PARK, Jong-kun (Ryan), Regional Compliance Officer of Siemens Ltd. Seoul, shared his company case regarding compliance and business ethics by introducing its compliance system, structure, and collective actions of Siemens AG and Siemens Ltd. Seoul, based on its founder’s philosophy as well as its strong belief that business should be built on compliance as its top priority.

Ms. Angela Joo-hyun KANG, Founder and Executive President of GCEF, introduced Fair Player Club and its activities. Also, she emphasized possibility of improvement of corporate culture through the Fair Play Pledge in the time of introduction of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act and benefits of collective action between private and public sectors as well as among companies, even with competitors.

Fair Player Club will continue to endeavor for prevention of corruption risks of companies and strengthen their capacity by spreading importance of compliance and business ethics to companies nationwide in major cities, through public private partnership with metropolitan governments as well as local chambers of commerce and industry in Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, Ulsan, Daejeon, and Incheon.
