The Fair Player Club Seminar for Compliance and Business Ethics with Korea In-house Counsel Association
Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF) organized the Fair Player Club Seminar for Compliance and Business Ethics, co-hosted by Korea In-house Counsel Association (KICA) and Global Compact Network Korea (GCNK) on October 11, 2016 aat the Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry, in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
This seminar, sponsored by Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (MOTIE), Ministry of Interior (MOI), Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission (ACRC), and Siemens Integrity Initiative and organized by Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF), was the one of the seminars of Fair Player Club for in-house counsels and compliance managers of public and private enterprises. The seminar introduced global and domestic trends of compliance, business ethics, and anti-corruption and shared anti-corruption cases including policies, programs, and management systems of public and private enterprises.
At the seminar, Mr. LEE Byung-hwa, Chairman of KICA, Mr. IM, Hong-jae, Vice President and Secretary-General of GCNK, and Ms. Angela Joo-hyun KANG, Founder and Executive President of GCEF co-signed the MOU for joint cooperation promoting anti-corruption the South Korean society.
Mr. LEE Byung-hwa, Chairman of KICA, said in his opening speech that “The competitiveness of in-house counsel is the significant element for empowering corporate management and the national economy. I hope this seminar will be helpful to strengthen capability of compliance and business ethics and to enhance the anti-corruption in Republic of Korea.”
Mr. SUNG, Yung-hoon, Chairperson & Chief Ombudsman, Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission, said in his congratulatory speech that “We are at a critical point of change and innovation leaping towards a developed country and for a transparent and fair society. I would like to ask all of in-house counsels for your active participation and to support the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act become to make a culture of integrity and change the South Korean society that everyone receives a fair assessment.
Mr. IM, Hong-jae, Vice President and Secretary-General of GCNK, said in his welcoming speech that “Fair Player Club will continue to endeavor for creating a transparent and fair environment by the raising awareness of anti-corruption and spreading compliance and business ethics with KICA.
He also presented global CSR and anti-corruption trends and introduced international regulations and conventions of anti-corruption including OECD Anti-Bribery Convention, UN Convention Against Corruption, and UK Bribery Act etc.
Mr. KWAK, Hyung-sok, Director General of Anti-Corruption Bureau, Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission explained the background of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, history of anti-corruption in a global environment, significance of the Act, application scope, prohibited practices, exceptional rules, and ombudsman system.
Mr. CHA, Dong-eon, Attorney at Law, Lawfirm Hwa Woo, presented the core contents of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act as well as the practical ways to apply and interpret, and shared specific cases related with the Act.
Ms. LEE Eun-kyung, Team Leader of GCNK, introduced global anti-corruption guidelines and compliance system and presented definition and types of corruption, risks of corruption, anti-corruption opportunities, global compliance materials, and ‘anti-corruption ethics and compliance guideline for business and SMEs’.
Mr. LEE Wan-keun, Attorney, Compliance Team, KCC Corporation, shared his company case regarding its compliance organization and performances, anti-corruption policies, in-house response system for the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, and employee training.
Mr. SEOL, Kwang-ho, Compliance officer & Lawyer, Korea Investment & Securities Co., Ltd., introduced his company case regarding its the CEO’s willingness on compliance and business ethics, paradigm shift of business, compliance system, monitoring and relevant action.
Mr. CHAE, Joo-yup, Senior Counsel, Law Department, Johnson & Johnson Medical Companies, explained his company case regarding compliance history, fraud & abuse compliance program, 7 essential elements including written standards, compliance officer & committee, education & training, auditing & monitoring, reporting process, disciplinary mechanism, and investigation & remediation.
Ms. Angela Joo-hyun KANG, Founder and Executive President of GCEF, introduced Fair Player Club, its past activities, and Fair Play Pledge. She explained benefits of collective action between public and private sectors as well as among companies, even with competitors. She also emphasized potential improvement of corporate culture through joining Fair Play Pledge in the time of introduction of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act.
Fair Player Club will continue to endeavor for prevention of corruption risks of companies and strengthen their capacity by spreading importance of compliance and business ethics to companies nationwide in major cities, through public private partnership with metropolitan governments as well as local chambers of commerce and industry in Seoul, Busan, Gwangju, Daegu, Ulsan, Daejeon, and Incheon.
