‘2018 W20 Talk Concert’ in Seoul to promote global women leadership

- The forum on empowering global women leadership for gender equality to be held on Oct. 26 (Friday), 2018 at 2-5 p.m. at the ECC Theater, Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea.

- Ewha Womans University president, ambassadors, and diplomats of W20 and G20 presidency countries, South Korean delegates for 2018 W20 Argentina and the W20 Summit, and the women executives working on W20 themes will share their experiences.

Ewha Institute for Leadership Development (EILD) and Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF) are set to jointly host “2018 W20 Talk Concert” and explore the topic of empowering global women leadership for gender equality on Oct. 26 (Friday), 2018 at the ECC Theater at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Women 20 (W20) is one of official engagement groups of G20 and a global network in which representatives of the women in the G20 countries discuss and propose policies for economic empowerment of women to the governing of bodies of G20 countries. At the 2017 Summit, W20 leaders submitted a set of policy proposals to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. High-ranking women leaders like Christine Legarde, Managing Director and Chairwoman of the International Monetary Fund, have attended the W20 forums as high level panel speakers.

The forthcoming event is part of International Exchange and Cooperation programs sponsored by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF). The GCEF, the ministry-designated institution in charge of the event, will share the details and achievements of the fourth W20 Summit, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from Oct. 1-3, 2018.

“2018 W20 Talk Concert” is scheduled to start with the welcome speech by Kim Hei-sook, President of Ewha Womans University, which will be followed congratulatory speeches by Australian Ambassador James Choi, German Ambassador Stephan Auer and Argentine Ambassador Jorge Jose Alberto Roballo. W20 was incepted in Australia in 2014, with its presidency served by Germany in 2017 and Argentina in 2018. The keynote speech will be delivered by Kim Kyung-han, Deputy Director-General for International Economic Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who is in charge of G20 ins South Korea.

In the following presentation session, the South Korean delegation will report on the 2018 W20 Summit and W20 policy recommendation process. Next, Prof. Cho Sung-nam, Director of EILD, will moderate a panel discussion on “the Role of Business and Society for Global Women Leadership Empowerment.” Panel members are Chung Seung-hye, Vice President of McDonald’s Korea; Lim Mi-seon, COO of HSBC Korea; Mary Shinn, COO & Vice President of SAP Korea; and Min Hee-kyung, Executive Vice President of Global CSV, CJ.

“As ‘2018 W20 Talk Concert’ is South Korea’s first-ever official event to introduce W20, it is very meaningful that Ewha Womans University, which has taken a leading role for promoting women’s roles in the past 130 years, hosts this event,” said Kim Hei-sook, President of Ewha Womans University. “Ewha Womans University will continue to promote global leadership education based on inclusion and diversity so that more women will take greater roles in the international community.”

The discussion about W20 Summit started in the G20 Summit held in Australia and then included more detailed ideas about agendas in the following Summits in Turkey, China and Germany. This year, about 80 delegates from 20 countries joined the 2018 W20 Summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where they met with some 700 local delegates and experts. This year, four focus topics were discussed: labor inclusion, digital inclusion, financial inclusion and rural development. It is notable that W20 added rural development to as the focus topics for the first time. The delegations also delivered this year’s policy recommendations to Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri. The Argentine G20 presidency chose gender equality as a priority issue for the G20 in 2018. The Korean delegation was composed of Prof. Kang Min-ah of Public Administration at Ewha Womans University; Angela Joo-Hyun Kang, Founder and Executive President of the GCEF; and Huh Kum-joo, Senior Executive Vice President of Kyobo Life Insurance.

As part of help promote “W20 Talk Concert,” Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) sponsors a book titled “Warriors - Rural Women Around the World: 28 Enlightened Voices,” which has been published to commemorate the International Day of Rural Women, established by the UN. The book also celebrates the first hosting of the G20 and W20 meetings in South America, and includes a contribution article on South Korean policies by Angela Joo-Hyun Kang of the GCEF.

“W20 Talk Concert” is sponsored by Kyobo Life Insurance, CMO Campus, Expat Professional and Business Women’s Network International (EPBWN), Harvard Kennedy School Women’s Network (HKSWN), Women in INovation (WIN), and Korea-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI).
