¡Þ Multi-faceted Analysis including Finance, Labor, Digital, and Rural Areas to Promote Women's Rights
W20 is one of the official engagement groups of the G20. Women entrepreneurs, NGO activists, and scholars gather to discuss the policies for promoting women's rights and gender equality and propose them to the G20. The W20 summit of this year focused on 'How to Increase Women Participation Rate' in four areas of finance, labor, digital, and rural inclusion.
The South Korean Delegation consisting of three people exchanged various discussions with women delegates of 20 countries for three days and the policy recommendation was delivered to the President of Argentina, Chair of G20, which will be held in December. Policy recommendations include - Trying to reduce the gender gap in labour force participation by 25 percent by 2025, eliminating all forms of discrimination against women, particularly in laws and regulations on access to and control of land, assets and resources, ensuring equal access to credit, financial services, equity and markets for women, developing holistic and cross-sectoral policies that abolish the barriers to women's access and use of digital technologies and the internet, guaranteeing inclusive educational programs that boost equal participation of women and girls in STEAM studies (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), securing women’s access to social services, including education, health and legal services in rural areas, and investing in infrastructure for rural development and ensuring the participation of women.
¡Þ Work 30 hours per week until children grow up to 9 years old… Companies making women-friendly environment
In South Korea, companies are trying to ensure the opportunities for women's social participation and career development support. McDonald's Korea maintains a high female employment rate with its age and gender blind open recruitment system. Currently, the proportion of women is close to 69% among the more than 1,300 full-time employees working in McDonald's stores and headquarters in South Korea. The rate of senior women executives is also 50%.
HSBC Korea has established the HSBC Korea Women Committee and implements mentoring between seniors and juniors and coaching programs. Committee members are actively engaged with social contribution activities together with donation and volunteering for supporting the marginalized groups in South Korea and abroad.
Some companies create the working environment where working moms can work better. SAP Korea, a German-based software development company, is committed to allow working 30 hours per week until a child becomes a sophomore in elementary school so that work and child care balance of working mom employees can be achieved. Work hours can also be adjusted flexibly, and home working is also possible if needed. The employees with pre-school children also receive childcare allowance of KRW 300,000 won per month for childcare.
There is a company ensuring social participation opportunities of women in rural areas in the undeveloped countries. CJ, in partnership with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), set up a pepper farm in Ninh Thuan, a small ethnic village in southern Viet Nam from 2014 to 2017, transfer farming skills to local women, and create jobs. CJ also renovated schools and community centers in order to provide basic education programs including agricultural education to rural women.
All women executive speakers emphasized that “The institutional support is necessary, but it is more important that the culture without gender discrimination should be settled down”. Ms. Chung, Seung-Hye, Vice President of McDonald’s Korea insisted that “Achieving high women employment rates was possible because corporate executives were able to sympathize with the importance of gender equality in organizational culture. The culture must be backed up to sustain this trend”. Ms. Mary Shinn, COO & Vice President of SAP Korea said that “Women marginalization is more severe in the field of digital technology, because it is regarded as a "male domain". Since childhood, girls should be raised up in the environment which they can easily access digital technology and learn it naturally”.
