<Background and Purpose>

- Launched in 2000, UN Global Compact has over 6.200 corporate participants and stakeholders from over 130 countries as signatory members. More than 4,700 members are corporations. It has been expanding its social responsibility awareness continuously and reinforced as one of major agenda of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon after 2006.

- UN Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. It is currently the largest voluntary corporate citizenship initiative in global community.

- However, Korean corporations tend to think business management integrated with human rights very difficult, not realizing many of their existing activities are already related with areas of economic, social and cultural rights.

- Many advanced non-Korean corporations have started business management integrated with human rights from a small but basic step. They try to find human rights related components from their existing business activities based on human rights related principle 1 and 2 of UN Global Compact and to expand their recognition and activities in business and human rights arena.

- The 2007 publication of “Embedding Human Rights in Business Practice II” issued by UN Global Compact and United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights explains best practices of business management integrated with human rights in the areas of business strategy, policy, process and procedures, communication, training, evaluation and measurement and reporting.

- Thus, the upcoming business roundtable on business and human rights aims to have in-depth dialogue by inviting the limited number of business people who are interested in starting business management integrated with human rights. Its main purpose is to share awareness and recognition that the human rights principles of UN Global Compact are not restricting business activities, but enabling business to utilize strategic frameworks in business management, which are universally acceptable and adaptable to all stakeholders in spheres of corporate influence.

- The upcoming business roundtable is aimed to have in-depth and interactive dialogue of business people focusing on human rights principles of UN Global Compact by inviting an international expert on business and human rights.
