Outcomes - 2018 W20 Talk Concert

Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF) jointly hosted the 2018 W20 Talk Concert with Ewha Institute for Leadership Development (EILD) with the topic of empowering global women leadership for gender equality on Friday, October 26, 2018 at the ECC Theater of the Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

This event was designed and implemented as a post-briefing meeting to the South Korean women community regarding the 2018 W20 Summit, held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 1-3, 2018, by GCEF, a recipient organization of the 2018 NGO Global Network Support Project of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF). More than 100 people from government, business, academia, women organizations, and young women students attended the event, broadcasted live to W20 countries.

Women 20 (W20) is one of official engagement groups of G20 as a global network in which representatives of the women in the G20 countries discuss and propose policies for economic empowerment of women to the governing of bodies of G20 countries. At the 2017 W20 Summit, W20 leaders submitted a set of policy proposals to H.E. Angela Merkel, German Chancellor. High-ranking women leaders like Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director and Chairperson of the International Monetary Fund, have attended the W20 forums as high level panel speakers. At the 2018 W20 Summit, W20 delegations headed by Ms. Susana Balbo, Chair of 2018 W20 Argentina, delivered the policy recommendations to H.E. Mauricio Macri, President of Argentina.

2018 W20 Talk Concert was sponsored by Kyobo Life Insurance, CMO Campus, Expat Professional and Business Women’s Network International (EPBWN), Harvard Kennedy School Women’s Network (HKSWN), Women in INovation (WIN), and Korea-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI).

Especially, Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), based in Costa Rica, sponsored a book titled “Warriors - Rural Women Around the World: 28 Enlightened Voices”, which has been published to commemorate the International Day of Rural Women, established by the UN. This publication celebrates the hosting of the G20 and W20 in South America for the first time and includes contribution articles of 28 leaders in government, international organizations, academia, and media etc. around the world. Ms. Angela Joo-Hyun Kang, Founder and Executive President, Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF), a W20 Delegate, and a B20 Task Force Member, also contributed her article on the South Korean policies supporting for development of rural women and the importance of global policy coordination.

The 2018 W20 Talk Concert began with the welcome speech by Ms. Kim Heisook, President of Ewha Womans University. She emphasized the importance of the 2018 W20 Talk Concert as the first-ever official event to introduce W20 in South Korea and the significance that the event took place at the Ewha Womans University taking a leading role for promoting women’s roles in the past 130 years.

Congratulatory speeches were delivered by H.E. James Choi, Ambassador of Australia, the country that W20 was incepted in 2014, when Australia was the G20 presidency country, through his video message, H.E. Stephan Auer, Ambassador of Germany, the G20 and W20 presidency country in 2017, and H.E. Jorge Jose Alberto Roballo, Ambassador of Argentina, the G20 and W20 presidency country in 2018. They all conveyed congratulations of the 2018 W20 Talk Concert, introduced the key achievements related with W20 as well as gender equality policies and activities in each country, and emphasized the importance of enhancing women's economic empowerment and global leadership for gender equality.

The keynote speech was conveyed by Mr. Kyunghan Kim, Deputy Director-General, International Economic Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who is in charge of G20 in South Korea, with the topic of Global Governance and Women Leadership. He compared the current status of gender equality between South Korea and other countries and introduced the several policy measures for improving gender equality in South Korea and the recommendations for enhancing global women leadership of South Korea.

Three delegates of the 2018 W20 South Korean Delegation who had participated in the 2018 W20 Summit presented their post-briefing regarding the year of 2018 W20 Argentina.

Prof. Kang, Minah, Department of Public Administration, Ewha Womans University & Commissioner, the Board of Audit and Inspection (2018 W20 Head of South Korean Delegation / 2019 G20 Japan Health Working Group International Advisory Group Member) introduced the overview of 2018 W20 Argentina, its policy recommendation dialogue and process with four topics - labor, digital, financial, and rural inclusion - and the 2018 W20 Argentina Summit.

Ms. Angela Joo-Hyun Kang, Founder and Executive President, Global Competitiveness Empowerment Forum (GCEF) (2017 & 2018 W20 Delegate / 2016 & 2017 & 2018 B20 Task Force Member) presented direct and indirect outputs, outcomes, and impacts of 2018 NGO Global Network Support Project of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family (MOGEF) with four dimensions - delegation, project, policy, and media outreach - through GCEF and the 2018 W20 South Korean Delegation.

Ms. Kumjoo Huh, Senior Executive Vice President, Kyobo Life Insurance (2018 W20 Delegate / G20 Business Woman Leaders Task Force Korea Representative) introduced various country-specific indicators about the women status as well as the G20 Business Women Leaders Task Force, which was created at the G20 Hamburg Summit in 2017, promoting women’s economic empowerment to the G20 Recommendations through the close cooperation with W20 and B20.

Prof. Cho Sung-nam, Director of EILD, moderated the panel discussion on the topic, the Role of Business and Society for Global Women Leadership Empowerment, by revisiting four topics of 2018 W20 Argentina - labor, digital, financial, and rural inclusion - with four high level female business executive panelists.

Ms. Chung, Seung-Hye, Vice President of McDonald’s Korea, presented on the theme of Labor Inclusion. She introduced the status of women employment at McDonald’s Korea that 69% of all employees and 50% of top management are women and emphasized that the corporate culture for openness, family friendliness, and diversity & inclusion as a success factor.

Ms. Lim, Mi Seon, COO of HSBC Korea introduced its corporate case on the theme of Financial Inclusion. She shared the case story about the HSBC Korea Women Committee, which was established by HSBC Korea and introduced its activities by its senior executives supporting the career development of women employees in the financial sector and strengthening its network since 2007.

Ms. Mary Shinn, COO & Vice President of SAP Korea delivered the presentation on the theme of Digital Inclusion. She emphasized the digital fluency as an accelerating factor for closing the gender gap at work in all areas including education, employment, development, and opportunities and introduced SAP’s business endeavors for empowering women with its high priorities and long-term commitments.

Ms. Heekyung Min, Executive Vice President of Global CSV, CJ shared the presentation on the theme of Rural Inclusion. She introduced CJ’s long time efforts for rural development and women in rural areas through CJ’s creating shared value (CSV) Project in Vietnam, the contract farming by improving farming technologies to grow chili peppers, increasing capacity building of small farmers, and motivating rural community development.

In the panel discussion, all women corporate executives shared their own stories that overcame difficulties in their professional and personal life and emphasized that it is important to overcome prejudice and perception in any situation that one faces and try to one’s best for success in competition through a clear goal setting and firm commitment, in order to expand women’s economic participation and strengthen global women leadership.

2018 W20 Talk Concert is a post-briefing meeting of the 2018 W20 Argentina Summit by sharing contents and achievement of 2018 W20 Argentina as well as a marketing event of W20 within South Korea, so that more women organizations and gender community can participate in W20 in the future. All participants of the event became more committed for expanding a role of women in many areas and amplifying the voices of women in various fields.
